Teens >> Teens and Peer Pressure

When you were kid, your friends were decided by your parents. But as you grow up, you take your decision yourself. Peers are the friends or the people which are very close to your age. They also have the same interests and life style like you. In the teen age, you are enough capable to take independent decisions. You decide your own peers and friend circle. As you spend enough time with your friends and peers, you are very much influence by each other habits and attitude. Most commonly teens attract towards bad habits soon.

In the teenage, your peers become an integral part of your life. During school and college days, you spend more time with your peers instead of parents. You treat them like your family members. You try to follow their life style and attitude. But sometimes, teens get attracted towards bad life style. A wrong step can even make their life hell. Peer pressure is the common problem in the teenage years. Everyone has to face this problem at least once in his life. Here are some common peer pressure problems faced by your teen.

Smoking and Drinking

Smoking and drinking is the most common peer pressure problem faced by your teen. In the starting years, they start smoking and drinking for fun only. In the later years, the situation becomes very challenging. Teens become addict to alcohol. They don’t want to consider themselves as losers. So they start behaving like their peers. This is the very tough situation to handle by parents.

Drug addiction

Drug addiction is the other common peer pressure faced by the teens. Initially, they are not aware about the adverse effects of drug addiction. When they become familiar with the adverse effects, it is too late. This is a life threatening issue that is quite impossible to resolve. Drug addiction ruins their future completely.

Sex

Sex is the most common issue faced by the teens. Both boys and girls are equally affected by the sex problems. In the modern age, people love to make sex in the early age. Boys who don’t like to make sex in the teenage are considered weak and dumb. Oral sex is more popular among teenagers. In oral sex, there is no chance of pregnancy. Teens don’t consider oral sex wrong.

Parents should aware the teens about sexual diseases like AIDS. You should also make them familiar about the right age of making sex.

How to handle peer pressure?

Parents should be open with their teens. They should not hesitate in communicating over the issues like drugs, smoking, drinking and sex. If you feel your teen is also suffering from peer pressure then you should not get angry with him. Make him realize his own identity. Your child should not forget his real attitude under the peer pressure. Tell them the fact that avoiding peers has little or no effect in their life. Advise them to concentrate on their future goals only. Peer pressure deviate teens from their real position. If your peer is wrong then you should explain the mistake to him.

Monitor your teen activity regularly

  • You should know your teen’s peer and friends. Also monitor how much they are influenced by their peers. If your teen’s friends are not good then ask him to stay away from his friends and peers.
  • If your teen does not come back home at the right time then ask the reason. Encourage him to stay in touch with positive people only.
  • Invite your child’s friends at home so that you can supervise them. This is the best way of monitoring your teen activity.
