The papaya is a fruit that is well-known for its nutritive properties and is found all over the world. But when it comes to be eaten by women in their pregnancy, it will not find many takers. There are myths associated with this fruit, especially in India and other Asian countries, where the papaya fruit is not given during pregnancy. What is actually the case is that a substance called latex, that is found in the unripe version of the fruit, is said to cause abortions or miscarriage due to its ability to initiate contractions in the uterus. The unripe papaya fruit therefore should not be taken by women during pregnancy.
Many of our mothers have taken ripe papaya mashed with milk and honey during their pregnancy. If taken in small amounts, the ripe version of the fruit will not cause you any harm. But still, it is always better to consult your doctor who will know the exact condition of your health and will therefore be able to suggest the right doses that you should be taking of this rich, nutritive fruit. Remember, of course to eat only the ripe version during your pregnancy!
