Hearing and speech
Development of speech and hearing is an ongoing process, which continues till the age of about 5 years. It forms one of the most important developmental milestones of a child’s life. Each month, the baby matures a little more and becomes better at his communication skills, which are necessary for the child’s overall development. Little do the parents realize that development of hearing and talking skills is quite a complex process, and they also play a pivotal role in it. If the parents acquire knowledge about the baby’s development, they can greatly simulate the communication development in the baby. However, there are some prerequisites for normal speech development, stated as under.
As the baby learns to speak primarily through hearing others, proper hearing ability during early months coupled with proper adult speech can greatly speed up learning process. By the end of 3 months, the child begins to get surprised by loud noises and communicate his needs by crying in different manners. As intelligence level rises, the baby not only begins to talk but also think. The brain begins to store coherent images and sounds. As a result, by the end of 6 months, your child may begin to cry out syllables like ba-ba, start recognizing music and changes in tone. There are some other important requirements, like proper functioning of organs like lips, larynx, tongue and palate. Also, normal coordination of body parts assist in speech development.
